Question: Cassandra, thank you for all the helpful links that you sent me! Do you think that I would be able to start my business with $500 (for supplies, permits, licenses, marketing, etc.)? P.A.

Answer: $500? More than enough to get started, assuming you already have a vehicle, of course. Call your County Clerk or biz licensing office in your area to ask what their biz registration fee is — prob less than $150 — think back then mine was either $80 or $120, but it depends on your county.

Get the basic liability insurance you need to cover your biz and pay out quarterly. (Consult with an insurance agent and let them know you are offering janitorial type services — easiest ins to get. Make sure the services you offer fall under your umbrella of coverage, however.)

Rent equipment you may need as the need arises with each job (i.e., generator, trailer, pressure washer, etc.) until your biz can afford to purchase these items. If you come upon a job but can’t afford to rent the equipment for that job, simply don’t take that job. Let your biz dictate what you can afford so you don’t wind up losing money on jobs … this little trick will go a long way in keeping your doors open. Good luck to you!
